When Quakerism first came to the north east of England in the 1650s, its converts in the town of Newcastle upon Tyne found neither welcome nor acceptance. Attempts to hold meetings for worship in the town were thwarted and they were escorted down to the bridge over the Tyne, to the "blew stone" which marked the limit of the town's authority. However, in 1698 they were allowed to build a Meeting House in Pilgrim Street. In the 1960s this was demolished for redevelopment, and the Meeting moved to the present premises in Jesmond.
This scholarly but readable book gives a portrait of Newcastle Meeting over 300
years, and evaluates the impact Quakers have had on Newcastle.
