A Message from the Leaveners
Dear Friends,
It’s hard to believe, but our last project of 2011 – our first residential theatre weekend for over 18’s – The 24 Hour Panto Project has now been and gone in a wonderful cloud of glitter and pumpkins!
We had a very jolly time at Croydon Meeting House (“oh no you didn’t!”, “oh yes we did!”) and performed possibly the first ever Quaker version of Cinderella on Sunday afternoon, complete with a committee of Fairy Godparents and Guardians, Fair Trade Christmas Puddings, and a Pantomime Horse. For anyone unable to join us at Croydon Meeting, check out our website – a video of the performance will soon be available online! www.leaveners.org/
Looking over our 2012 calendar, The Leaveners have a whole host of exciting events coming up – a couple of old favourites but many first time events too! Here’s a glimpse of what The Leaveners are up to in 2012...
13th-15th April – The Leaveners are teaming up with professional actor and Clown Steve Loader to deliver Quaker Clowning, a residential weekend at Sheffield Meeting House for 13-19 year olds who want to discover Clowning, and learn how it can be used as a powerful and mischievous form of non-violent social protest. No experience necessary, but sense of humour essential. Red noses provided... (see booking form attached or contact the office for more information!)27th-29th April – Booking is now open for ‘Discover Your Voice’, an informal and supportive weekend at High Leigh Conference Centre, Hertfordshire. Designed for people who have never sung, believe they can’t sing or want to get back into singing, absolutely no experience is necessary. (See booking form attached or contact the office for more information!)
15th – 17th June – Mark Russ and Patrick Jones will be running a choral weekend singing a mixture of past Leaveners favourites and new work at Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre.
2012 will also see us launch our first ever project for under 11’s, explore Forum Theatre, do some more Big Singing and perhaps even perform another Panto! And don’t forget – we also run art/music/drama workshops for Meetings.
Someone asked us recently “How do you become a Leavener?” The answer is YOU ARE! Anyone who has been involved in the past, supports us financially or is currently participating or volunteering with us IS a Leavener! We’re YOUR Quaker Creative Arts organisation, so if you have an idea, get in touch and we will make it happen.
Finally, here in The Leaveners office we wish all you Leaveners a very Merry Christmas, and a very Happy New Year – and hope to see you again in 2012!

Meeting for Worship
Our main meeting in Newcastle is held every Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. Every third Sunday of the month meeting is followed by lunch which is provided by groups within the meeting. The lunch is an excellent opportunity to get to know others in a relaxed informal atmosphere.
In addition there are early morning meetings held on Sundays at 8:00 a.m. which are followed by breakfast.
There is a Meeting for students and staff held at Newcastle University (open to students from all universities). The meeting is on the first Friday in the month at 12.30, at the Chaplaincy Centre which is part of St James Church, 19/20 Windsor Terrace in the Mandela room.
If morning meetings are just too early for you then we hold an evening meeting on the last Sunday of each month at 6:00pm. This meeting is designed to appeal to all ages and includes and activity and a meal. The activities range from arts and crafts to music to local walks. The meal is usually home made soup followed by puddings provided by those taking part.
Please go to the Forcoming Events page to check the dates of the above activities.
